RECENT DATA BREACH COULD LEAVE 100 MILLION CREDIT CARD ACCOUNTS EXPOSED: CAN PENNSYLVANIA BUSINESS

In what may potentially be the largest security breach in history, Heartland Payment Systems, the sixth largest credit card payment processor in the U.S., announced it suffered a data breach that could ultimately compromise approximately 100 million credit card accounts! Heartland determined that the data breach was the result of an individual (or individuals) placing information stealing software on Heartland's computer network.

The information exposed included credit card numbers and expiration dates, and in some cases the cardholders' names.

While Visa and Mastercard alerted Heartland to the potential data breach in October 2008, Heartland issued a press release confirming the data breach on Tuesday (the same day as the inauguration of President Obama).

Significantly, Heartland was deemed compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS) in April 2007. The PCI DSS is a worldwide security standard containing over 200 requirements which any company processing credit card data must meet. The PCI DSS standards are designed to improve the security of customer's financial information and halt the increasing problem of online credit card fraud and identity theft.

The lesson in all of this for Pennsylvania businesses is simple: compliance with minimum standards does not guarantee data security.
